Overview
VSL#3 is a high-potency probiotic medical food containing a proprietary blend of eight live freeze-dried bacterial strains. These include Streptococcus thermophilus (BT01), Bifidobacterium breve (BB02), Bifidobacterium longum (BL03), Bifidobacterium infantis (BI04), Lactobacillus acidophilus (BA05), Lactobacillus plantarum (BP06), Lactobacillus paracasei (BP07), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus. The product is available in both sachet and capsule forms, with each sachet containing 450 billion CFU and each capsule containing 112.5 billion CFU of the mixed probiotics[1][2][5]. The mechanism of action involves modulation of the gut microbiota composition, enhancement of intestinal barrier function, reduction of inflammation via downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and NOD-like receptor protein 3 inflammasome activity, as well as support for immune homeostasis[6]. VSL#3 has been clinically studied for use in gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcerative colitis—where it may help induce or maintain remission—irritable bowel syndrome, pouchitis after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis surgery, functional abdominal pain in children, sepsis-related immune modulation in critically ill children, and has also been investigated for potential benefits in Parkinson’s disease through anti-inflammatory effects[2][6][7].
