VSV-hIFN-β is an oncolytic virus, specifically a vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), that has been engineered to express human interferon-beta (hIFN-β). This novel immunotherapy approach is designed to selectively infect and kill tumor cells while simultaneously stimulating an anti-tumor immune response in the host. It was developed for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, a liver cancer with limited treatment options. Mayo Clinic Arizona received an approximately $600,000 grant from the FDA to fund a Phase 1 clinical study of VSV-hIFN-β for this indication.
