VT-X7 is a novel drug/device combination product developed by Osteal Therapeutics for the treatment of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) of the hip and knee. It consists of vancomycin hydrochloride and tobramycin sulfate delivered via an irrigation system directly into the joint space and surrounding tissue. This approach enables high local concentrations of two broad-spectrum antibiotics at the site of infection, effectively targeting both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including those in biofilms that are typically resistant to systemic therapy. The therapy is administered over seven days as part of a two-stage exchange arthroplasty procedure, significantly reducing treatment time compared to standard care. Clinical trials have demonstrated that VT-X7 achieves higher infection-free rates at one year (>90%) with faster recovery (median 7 days to revision surgery vs. 98–102 days for standard care), reduced overall procedure time, and lower patient burden[1][2][4][5][6][7][8].
