Overview

VV-GMCSF-S-Lact is a recombinant oncolytic vaccinia virus developed by the Russian biotechnology company Oncostar. Engineered from the Lister strain (L-IVP), which was historically used for smallpox vaccination, the virus is designed to selectively replicate in and lyse tumor cells. It is modified with deletions of the viral thymidine kinase and growth factor genes to enhance tumor selectivity and safety. The virus expresses two therapeutic transgenes: granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), which recruits and activates dendritic cells to stimulate a systemic antitumor immune response, and lactaptin, a proteolytic fragment of human milk kappa-casein that induces apoptotic death in cancer cells. VV-GMCSF-S-Lact is currently in preclinical development for the treatment of various solid tumors, including glioma, breast cancer, skin adenocarcinoma, and lung cancer.
