Overview

VVIFNβ is an oncolytic vaccinia virus engineered to express interferon-beta (IFNβ). It functions through a dual mechanism: selective replication within tumor cells leading to direct cell lysis (oncolysis), and the localized production of IFNβ, which enhances the anti-tumor immune response by activating dendritic cells and CD8+ T cells. Pre-clinical studies in thoracic cancer models, such as lung cancer and mesothelioma, have shown that VVIFNβ is safer and more effective than other viral vectors like vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), providing sustained cytokine production and significant tumor regression. It is designed for intratumoral or intravenous administration.
