Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VXA-CoV2-3.1 is an investigational oral tablet vaccine developed by Vaxart for the prevention of symptomatic COVID-19. It utilizes a non-replicating adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) vector platform to deliver the gene for the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, specifically targeting the XBB.1.5 variant. The vaccine is unique for its oral administration and thermostability, designed to induce both systemic and mucosal immunity (IgA) in the gut and respiratory tract. It incorporates a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) adjuvant to enhance the immune response. VXA-CoV2-3.1 has been evaluated in a Phase 2b clinical trial (NCT06672055) supported by the U.S. government's BARDA Project NextGen, comparing its efficacy and safety against approved mRNA injectable boosters.
