Overview
VXA-H5-1.1 (influenza pandemic (h5) clade 2.3.4.4b vaccine) is an investigational oral tablet vaccine developed by Vaxart for the prevention of pandemic influenza caused by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 viruses, specifically those belonging to clade 2.3.4.4b. The vaccine is built on Vaxart's proprietary VAAST (Vector-Adjuvant-Antigen Standardized Technology) platform, utilizing a non-replicating adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5) vector that expresses the influenza hemagglutinin (HA) antigen. It is co-formulated with a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) adjuvant that acts as a Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) agonist to enhance immunogenicity. Designed as an enteric-coated tablet, the vaccine bypasses the stomach to release in the small intestine, where it targets mucosal immune cells to induce both systemic and mucosal immunity (including mucosal IgA in the nose and mouth). VXA-H5-1.1 is currently in preclinical development.
