Overview

W1302 is a synthetic small molecule drug candidate developed by the Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMM-CAMS) for the treatment of vascular dementia (VaD). It is designed as a multi-target agent that primarily acts as an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, thereby increasing acetylcholine levels in the synaptic cleft to improve cholinergic neurotransmission and cognitive function. Beyond its cholinergic effects, W1302 exhibits significant neuroprotective properties, including the reduction of oxidative stress and the inhibition of neuronal apoptosis, which are critical in the pathology of ischemia-related cognitive decline. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its ability to improve learning and memory in animal models of permanent and transient cerebral ischemia. W1302 has received approval for clinical trials in China and is currently being evaluated for its safety and efficacy in patients with vascular dementia.
