Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Wafesil is a sublingual wafer formulation of sildenafil citrate developed by iX Biopharma for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Utilizing the proprietary WaferiX technology, the drug is produced via a freeze-drying process to create a small, fast-dissolving wafer that is administered under the tongue. This delivery method allows sildenafil to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the sublingual mucosa, bypassing first-pass metabolism in the liver. This potentially leads to a faster onset of action and improved bioavailability compared to conventional oral tablets. Sildenafil acts as a selective inhibitor of cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which is responsible for the degradation of cGMP in the corpus cavernosum. By inhibiting PDE5, sildenafil increases levels of cGMP, enhancing the effect of nitric oxide and facilitating penile erection during sexual stimulation.
