WAL0921 is a first-in-class, proprietary, humanized monoclonal antibody developed by Walden Biosciences for the treatment of kidney diseases. It specifically binds to both circulating free soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and its membrane-bound form (uPAR), inhibiting their pathological activity. Elevated suPAR levels are implicated in kidney tissue damage, podocyte dysfunction, proteinuria, and progression to end-stage renal disease. By targeting this pathway, WAL0921 aims to provide a novel and disease-modifying approach for various chronic and rare glomerular kidney diseases. The drug has demonstrated safety and proof-of-biology in Phase 1 studies with rapid reduction of free suPAR levels in healthy subjects. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for multiple glomerular kidney diseases including diabetic nephropathy (DN), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), treatment-resistant minimal change disease (TR-MCD), IgA nephropathy (IgAN), and membranous nephropathy (MN)[1][3][5][6].
