Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Walvax PPSV23 is a 23‑valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine developed by Walvax that contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae and is indicated for active immunization to prevent pneumococcal disease in individuals at increased risk, typically aged 2 years and older.[1][4] Each 0.5 mL dose contains 25 μg of polysaccharide from each included serotype in isotonic buffer, and works by inducing a T‑cell–independent humoral immune response that increases circulating anti‑pneumococcal IgG antibodies against the capsular polysaccharides, thereby reducing the risk of invasive disease such as bacteremia and meningitis caused by vaccine serotypes.[1][4] It is supplied as a single‑dose prefilled syringe for intramuscular or subcutaneous injection and has been shown in a phase III randomized, double‑blind non‑inferiority trial to have immunogenicity and safety comparable to the reference PPSV23 vaccine (Pneumovax 23).[1][4]
