Wanpagliflozin is an orally administered small molecule inhibitor of the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), developed by Jiangsu Wanbang Biochemical Pharmaceutical Group, a subsidiary of Fosun Pharma. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The drug works by selectively inhibiting SGLT2 in the proximal convoluted tubules of the kidney, which prevents the reabsorption of filtered glucose into the bloodstream. This mechanism promotes the excretion of glucose through the urine (glucosuria), thereby lowering plasma glucose levels independently of insulin secretion or action. Wanpagliflozin has undergone Phase 3 clinical trials in China to evaluate its efficacy and safety as a monotherapy and in combination with other antidiabetic agents.
