Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The Wantai higher-valency pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is a multivalent vaccine candidate under development by Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise for the prevention of pneumococcal infections and pneumonia caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. In September 2026, Wantai terminated its 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV20) project, which was co-developed with Jiangsu Kunli Biopharmaceutical, due to rapid global technological advancements toward higher-valency vaccines. Wantai subsequently shifted its focus and redirected its remaining funds to this higher-valency pneumococcal conjugate vaccine project, which is designed to target a broader range of serotypes (such as 24-valent or higher) to provide enhanced protection and global competitiveness. The vaccine utilizes conjugate technology, chemically linking pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides to carrier proteins to induce a T-cell dependent immune response, which is particularly effective in infants and young children.
