Overview

Warfarin placebo is a pharmacologically inactive substance used as a control in clinical research. Specifically, in the Warfarin-Aspirin Recurrent Stroke Study (WARSS) led by Columbia University, it was utilized in a double-blind, double-dummy trial design to compare the efficacy of warfarin against aspirin for the prevention of recurrent ischemic stroke. The placebo was manufactured to be indistinguishable from the active 2mg scored warfarin tablets to ensure the integrity of the study's blinding. The WARSS trial ultimately found no significant difference between warfarin and aspirin in preventing recurrent stroke or death over a two-year period.
