Overview

Washed Microbiota Transplantation (WMT) is an optimized form of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) that utilizes an automated purification system and multiple centrifugal washing steps to prepare a precise microbiota suspension. Developed primarily by researchers in China (notably at Nanjing Medical University and Guangdong Pharmaceutical University), WMT aims to improve the safety and efficacy of traditional FMT by removing pro-inflammatory metabolites, mucus, and debris from donor feces. This process reduces the incidence of adverse events and allows for more standardized dosing. WMT is being investigated for a wide range of conditions, including inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease), metabolic disorders (metabolic syndrome, obesity), and dermatological conditions (atopic dermatitis), by restoring gut microbiota homeostasis and modulating host metabolism.
