Wasp venom protein refers to the complex mixture of allergenic proteins derived from the venom of wasps, primarily from the *Vespula* genus (yellow jackets), used in venom immunotherapy (VIT). This biologic agent is employed to desensitize individuals with IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to wasp stings, which can otherwise lead to life-threatening anaphylaxis. The mechanism of action involves the induction of peripheral T-cell tolerance, the promotion of regulatory T cells (Tregs) that secrete IL-10 and TGF-beta, and a shift in the antibody profile from allergen-specific IgE to protective IgG4. In the context of clinical research at the Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG), it has been studied in pilot trials evaluating accelerated or high-dose (100 µg) starting regimens to improve the efficiency and safety of the desensitization process.
