Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Water O-15 (oxygen-15 water, [15O]-water) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical consisting of water labeled with the positron-emitting isotope oxygen-15 (O-15). It is widely considered the non-invasive gold standard for the absolute quantification of tissue perfusion and blood flow using positron emission tomography (PET). Because it is metabolically inert and freely diffusible across cell membranes, its distribution and clearance are entirely dependent on regional blood flow. It is primarily being developed and investigated for myocardial perfusion imaging to detect coronary artery disease (CAD), as well as for assessing cerebral blood flow in neurological conditions (such as hydrocephalus, Alzheimer's disease, and ischemic stroke) and tumor perfusion in oncology. Due to its extremely short half-life of approximately 2 minutes, it must be produced on-site using a cyclotron and automated point-of-care synthesis and infusion systems, such as MedTrace's P3 MT-100 system.
