Drug intelligence / Profile preview
WBF-011 is a multi-strain probiotic formulation developed by Pendulum Therapeutics (formerly Whole Biome) for the dietary management of type 2 diabetes. The formulation consists of five specific anaerobic bacterial strains—*Akkermansia muciniphila*, *Clostridium beijerinckii*, *Clostridium butyricum*, *Bifidobacterium infantis*, and *Anaerobutyricum hallii*—along with the prebiotic fiber inulin. WBF-011 is designed to restore the production of beneficial metabolites, particularly the short-chain fatty acid butyrate and the secondary bile acid ursodeoxycholate (UDCA), which are often deficient in the gut microbiome of individuals with type 2 diabetes. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled Phase 2 trial (NCT03893422), WBF-011 demonstrated significant improvements in postprandial glucose control (AUC) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. Notably, the efficacy of the formulation may be influenced by concurrent medication, as sulfonylurea drugs have been shown to inhibit the growth of the probiotic strains in vitro. The product is commercially available as Pendulum Glucose Control.
