Weißdorn

Weißdorn (Hawthorn extract) is a botanical extract derived from the leaves, flowers, and berries of *Crataegus* species (primarily *Crataegus monogyna* and *Crataegus laevigata*). It is widely used in European phytotherapy as a cardiotonic agent for the treatment of mild heart failure (NYHA class II) and orthostatic circulatory disorders. The extract contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, including oligomeric procyanidins (OPCs) and flavonoids (such as vitexin and hyperoside). Weißdorn exerts its therapeutic effects through multiple mechanisms, including the inhibition of the sarcolemmal Na+/K+-ATPase pump (which increases intracellular calcium and enhances myocardial contractility), the inhibition of phosphodiesterase 3 (PDE3), and the activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), leading to vasodilation and improved coronary blood flow. It is marketed in various formulations, both as a mono-preparation and in combination with other active ingredients like D-camphor.
