Weiren Xiaoyou Fang (威仁消疣方, Weiren Xiaoyou formula, WRXYF) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formulation used primarily for the treatment of warts, especially palmoplantar warts associated with human papillomavirus (HPV). Clinical studies and meta-analyses suggest that topical application of this formula is more effective than conventional medications for treating palmoplantar warts. The main bioactive compound identified in WRXYF is tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA), which has demonstrated antiviral activity against HPV subtypes 2, 27, and 57 by destroying viral particles and reducing viral copy numbers. Mechanistically, Tan IIA halts the cell cycle of HPV-infected keratinocytes in the G0/G1 phase through modulation of the p53 signaling pathway and regulation of cell cycle-related proteins[1]. The formulation contains multiple herbal ingredients; however, Tan IIA is considered its primary active constituent.
