Weissella cibaria SGW054 is a probiotic bacterial strain being investigated for its potential therapeutic effects in Parkinson's disease (PD). It functions as a live biotherapeutic that restores gut microbiota balance and brain homeostasis. In preclinical models, SGW054 has demonstrated antibacterial activity against Proteus mirabilis, a pathogen associated with PD pathology, and has been shown to reduce the translocation of alpha-synuclein aggregates from the gut to the brain. The strain mitigates neuroinflammation by suppressing glial hyperactivation and lowering the release of proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), in both the colon and the brain. Additionally, it helps maintain gut barrier integrity and alleviates microbiota dysbiosis by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria like Bacteroides and Faecalibacterium.
