Overview

**Weizmannia coagulans BC179** is a probiotic bacterial strain, formerly classified as *Bacillus coagulans*, clinically investigated for its protective effects in chronic alcohol consumers. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, supplementation with BC179 (3 g/day, 1 × 10¹⁰ CFU) for 30 days in adults with a history of long-term alcohol consumption led to significantly reduced blood alcohol concentrations after alcohol ingestion, boosting the activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). It also decreased serum markers of hepatic injury (ALP), systemic inflammation (hs-CRP, TNF-α, IL-6), and oxidative stress (CYP2E1, MDA), while upregulating anti-inflammatory and antioxidant markers (IL-10, SOD, glutathione). Metabolomic profiling indicated modulation of taurine and hypotaurine metabolism and downregulation of caffeine pathways. The data suggest the strain exerts its effects through enhancement of alcohol metabolism, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, and targeted host metabolic pathway modulation[2].
