Overview

Weizmannia coagulans SANK70258 is a spore-forming, lactic acid-producing probiotic bacterium being investigated for various health benefits. As a live biotherapeutic, it modulates the gut microbiome and has direct immunomodulatory effects. Its spore-forming nature makes it resistant to heat and acid, allowing it to reach the intestine alive. Research has explored its potential in ulcerative colitis (UC) by enhancing the production of butyrate, an anti-inflammatory short-chain fatty acid, especially when combined with other specific bacteria. The bacterium is also being studied for its ability to relieve symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, improve constipation, and enhance skin health. Many of the studies are authored by researchers from Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, who manufacture the strain.
