Welgenaleucel is an autologous CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy. It consists of a patient's own T lymphocytes genetically engineered to express a CAR targeting CD19, a protein broadly expressed on the surface of B cells. The therapy is designed to selectively eliminate malignant B cells in conditions such as B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma and lymphoid leukemia by redirecting the immune response specifically toward CD19-expressing cells. Mechanistically, it acts through CD19 inhibition, gene transfer (integration of the CAR transgene by lentiviral vector), and replacement of defective T lymphocytes. Developed by UWELL Biopharma, it is being investigated primarily for relapsed/refractory B-cell malignancies[1][3][5][7].
