Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Wen Jing Zhi Tong Fang is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the management of cancer-related pain. The formula is designed based on the TCM therapeutic principle of "warming the meridians and dissipating cold" to alleviate pain associated with "cold-coagulation and blood stasis," a common diagnostic pattern in advanced cancer patients. It is frequently administered as a topical ointment or paste (often referred to as Wenjing Zhitong Gao) applied to specific acupoints or the site of pain, though it can also be prepared as an oral decoction. Pharmacological research indicates that the formula exerts analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and by modulating cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-6. It is primarily utilized as an adjuvant therapy to improve pain control and reduce the requirement for opioid analgesics in patients with bone metastases or neuropathic cancer pain.
