Overview

Westgrelor is an oral antiplatelet medication developed and manufactured by Western Pharmaceutical Industries (Western Remedies Pharmaceuticals) in Egypt. It is a generic formulation of ticagrelor, a member of the cyclo-pentyl-triazolo-pyrimidine (CPTP) chemical class. Westgrelor acts as a direct-acting, reversible, and allosteric antagonist of the P2Y12 receptor, which is a primary receptor for adenosine diphosphate (ADP) on the platelet surface. Unlike thienopyridines such as clopidogrel, Westgrelor does not require metabolic activation to exert its effect. By inhibiting the P2Y12 receptor, the drug prevents ADP-mediated activation of the GPIIb/IIIa receptor complex, thereby reducing platelet aggregation. It is indicated for the reduction of thrombotic cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction and stroke, in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or a history of myocardial infarction.
