WEVEE VLP is a trivalent virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate designed to protect against three mosquito-borne alphaviruses that cause severe encephalitis in humans—Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV), Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV)[1][2][3]. The vaccine consists of non-replicating VLPs composed of structural proteins from the outer shells of these viruses but lacks viral genetic material, so it cannot cause infection[1][2]. Developed by the Vaccine Research Center at the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), WEVEE VLP is intended for populations at high occupational risk such as military personnel and laboratory workers[2]. In preclinical studies and a Phase 1 clinical trial, the vaccine demonstrated safety, tolerability, and strong immunogenicity with durable neutralizing antibody responses against all three viruses[1][2][7]. The mechanism of action is immunostimulation via presentation of viral antigens to elicit protective immune responses.
