WG1025 is an investigational gene therapy developed by Beijing WellGene Biotech for the treatment of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB). It utilizes a non-replicating herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) vector to deliver a functional copy of the COL7A1 gene to the patient's skin cells. DEB is a rare and severe genetic blistering disorder caused by mutations in the COL7A1 gene, which encodes collagen VII, the primary component of anchoring fibrils that secure the epidermis to the dermis. By restoring the expression of collagen VII, WG1025 aims to stabilize skin structure, prevent blister formation, and promote the healing of chronic wounds. The therapy is designed for localized delivery to address the underlying genetic deficiency at the site of skin lesions.
