Overview

WGA-800CW is a lectin-based fluorescent imaging agent developed for the detection of esophageal dysplasia in patients with Barrett's esophagus. It consists of Wheat Germ Agglutinin (WGA), a lectin that binds specifically to N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and sialic acid residues, conjugated to the near-infrared fluorescent dye IRDye 800CW. When topically administered via a spray catheter during endoscopy, WGA-800CW binds to glycans that are differentially expressed in dysplastic tissue compared to normal mucosa. This allows for real-time visualization of otherwise invisible lesions using quantitative fluorescence molecular endoscopy (qFME) or optical coherence tomography-near-infrared fluorescence (OCT-NIRF) imaging systems. The agent is currently being evaluated in phase 1 clinical trials to determine the optimal dose and safety for detecting invisible esophageal dysplasia.
