WhartoCell is an allogeneic, off-the-shelf stem cell therapy consisting of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) isolated from Wharton's jelly. Developed by the Royan Institute and manufactured by Cell Tech Pharmed, WhartoCell is approved in Iran for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, where it acts to reduce joint inflammation, promote cartilage regeneration, and improve joint function. The therapeutic effects of WhartoCell are primarily mediated through paracrine signaling, involving the secretion of neurotrophic factors (such as BDNF, NGF, and GDNF), anti-inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-10 and TGF-β), and growth factors (such as IGF-1, VEGF, and FGF-2), alongside the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). In addition to osteoarthritis, WhartoCell is under clinical evaluation for various neurological and regenerative indications, including cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury.
