This investigational exosome-based therapy is being developed by TC Erciyes University for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa. The therapy consists of extracellular vesicles (exosomes) derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) harvested from Wharton's jelly, the connective tissue of the umbilical cord. These exosomes are thought to possess high paracrine activity, secreting a variety of growth factors and neurotrophins that provide neuroprotective support to degenerating photoreceptors and retinal tissue. Administered via subtenon injection, the therapy aims to slow or reverse the progressive vision loss associated with hereditary retinal dystrophies. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial to determine its efficacy and safety compared to whole stem cell therapy and placebo.
