Overview

Wharton jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) and their derived exosomes are being investigated by TC Erciyes University as a regenerative therapy for retinitis pigmentosa. WJ-MSCs are multipotent stem cells harvested from the umbilical cord matrix (Wharton's jelly). These cells and their exosomes are thought to exert therapeutic effects through the secretion of neurotrophic factors, immunomodulatory cytokines, and anti-apoptotic signals, which may help preserve photoreceptor function and slow retinal degeneration. In a Phase 2/3 clinical trial (NCT05413148), these biologics are administered via subtenon injection to evaluate their efficacy in improving or stabilizing visual functions in patients with retinitis pigmentosa. The stem cells and exosomes are processed in the university's Genome and Stem Cell GMP-certified laboratories.
