Overview

Wharton jelly-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (WJ-MSCs) are multipotent, non-hematopoietic stem cells isolated from the mucoid connective tissue (Wharton's jelly) within the human umbilical cord[1][2][3][4]. They exhibit high self-renewal capacity, proliferation, and the ability to differentiate into multiple cell types including osteoblasts, adipocytes, and chondrocytes[2][3]. WJ-MSCs have low immunogenicity, express markers such as CD73, CD90, and CD105, and possess strong immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory functions partly through the secretion of paracrine factors (secretome; including cytokines, growth factors, and exosomes)[2][3][4]. Their favorable characteristics over adult tissue-derived MSCs include higher proliferative capacity, enhanced immune evasion, robust secretome, and a safer (non-tumorigenic) profile[1][2][3]. Therapeutic applications in preclinical and early clinical research include regenerative medicine, tissue repair, treatment of diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal injuries, liver disease, and immune-mediated disorders[1][3][4][5].
