Wharton Jelly mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from the mucoid connective tissue of the umbilical cord. In the clinical research program led by Sophia Al-Adwan, these cells are being investigated as a regenerative therapy for diabetic nephropathy. The treatment involves a specialized ultrasound-guided intra-parenchymal injection directly into the renal tissue. WJ-MSCs are characterized by their low immunogenicity and potent paracrine activity; they secrete a variety of anti-inflammatory cytokines, pro-angiogenic factors, and trophic molecules. This mechanism is intended to modulate the local immune environment, reduce chronic inflammation, and arrest or reverse the fibrotic damage to the kidneys typically seen in advanced diabetic kidney disease.
