Overview

Wheat bran is the fiber-rich outer layer of the wheat kernel (*Triticum aestivum*), primarily composed of insoluble non-starch polysaccharides such as arabinoxylan and cellulose. It is widely utilized as a dietary intervention for gastrointestinal and metabolic health. Its primary mechanism involves increasing fecal bulk and reducing intestinal transit time, which alleviates constipation. Additionally, wheat bran serves as a prebiotic substrate for colonic microbiota, leading to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate and acetate. These SCFAs are associated with the stimulation of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion, which may improve insulin sensitivity and promote satiety. Clinical research has explored its role in weight management, the prevention of colorectal adenoma recurrence, and the management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
