Overview

Whey protein milk-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) are naturally occurring, lipid-bilayer nanoparticles isolated from the whey fraction of milk, typically bovine. These vesicles, which include exosomes and microvesicles, are characterized by their remarkable structural stability, allowing them to protect sensitive molecular cargo from degradation in the gastrointestinal tract. This property makes them a leading candidate for the oral delivery of diverse therapeutic modalities, including small interfering RNA (siRNA), antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), and small molecules. Beyond their role as a delivery vehicle, milk-derived EVs contain endogenous bioactive molecules such as transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) and various microRNAs that contribute to immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities. PureTech Health is a primary developer of this technology, exploring its utility in treating inflammatory conditions and enhancing the bioavailability of poorly absorbed drugs.
