Drug intelligence / Profile preview
White atractylodes rhizome (Bai Zhu) is the dried rhizome of *Atractylodes macrocephala* Koidz., a perennial plant in the Asteraceae family. It is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine widely used as a Spleen-Qi tonic to tonify Spleen Qi, dry dampness, stabilize the exterior (reduce sweating), and calm the fetus. Its traditional indications include digestive weakness with poor appetite, loose stools or diarrhea, abdominal distension, fatigue, fluid retention, and restless pregnancy. It is a key component of classic TCM formulas such as Si Jun Zi Tang, Shenling Baizhu San, and Yu Ping Feng San. Preclinical research suggests that its bioactive constituents, particularly sesquiterpenoids like atractylenolides (I, II, and III) and polysaccharides, possess gastrointestinal protective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and potential anticancer properties.
