Drug intelligence / Profile preview
White mustard extract is a botanical substance derived from the seeds of *Sinapis alba*. It contains bioactive compounds such as sinapine thiocyanate (ST) and various glucosinolates (e.g., sinalbin). In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is frequently used as a percutaneous treatment (Bai Jie Zi) during the summer to prevent and treat winter respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. The extract exhibits immunomodulatory properties by enhancing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin 1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and by modulating the density and morphology of epidermal Langerhans cells. Additionally, it possesses significant antibacterial activity against oral pathogens including *Streptococcus mutans* and *Lactobacillus* species, making it an effective ingredient in herbal toothpastes for reducing dental plaque and gingival inflammation. Beyond its direct therapeutic uses, it also serves as a natural emulsifier in pharmaceutical delivery systems.
