White mustard ointment is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) topical formulation developed by the Xinjiang Autonomous Region Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, specifically indicated for the treatment and prevention of bronchial asthma. The preparation is primarily composed of Semen Sinapis Albae (white mustard seed), which contains the glucosinolate sinigrin. When applied topically to specific acupuncture points (such as Feishu, Dazhui, and Tiantu), sinigrin is enzymatically converted to allyl isothiocyanate, a potent irritant that induces local vasodilation and stimulates cutaneous sensory nerves. This process is part of acupoint application therapy, intended to regulate the immune system, reduce airway inflammation, and decrease the frequency of asthma exacerbations. It is most commonly used during the Sanfu season (the hottest days of summer) to treat winter diseases in summer, a practice known as Dong Bing Xia Zhi.
