Overview

White thyme oil is the rectified essential oil obtained from the flowering plant *Thymus vulgaris*. It is produced through a second distillation (rectification) of the initial "red" thyme oil, resulting in a clearer liquid with a milder aroma and reduced skin irritancy. The oil's primary bioactive constituents are the phenols thymol and carvacrol, which exhibit potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. Mechanistically, these phenols disrupt microbial cell membranes, leading to the leakage of intracellular contents and subsequent cell death. In therapeutic contexts, white thyme oil is utilized as an expectorant for respiratory conditions, a topical antiseptic for minor wounds, and an active ingredient in oral hygiene products to combat dental plaque and gingivitis. It is also widely employed in aromatherapy and as a flavoring agent in the food industry, where it is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the FDA.
