Overview
Whole blood transfusion is a blood product intervention being evaluated for the management of coagulopathy in patients with acute traumatic hemorrhage. Unlike standard component therapy, which uses separated red blood cells, plasma, and platelets, whole blood provides all these components in physiologic proportions in a single unit. The specific product used in the T-STORHM trial by the Direction Centrale du Service de Santé des Armées is type O, leukocyte-depleted, and contains low titers of hemolysins to minimize transfusion reactions. This approach aims to simplify logistics in mass casualty scenarios and improve the early availability of clotting factors and platelets.
