Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Whole cell euglena gracilis, marketed as BioGlena™, is a natural dietary supplement ingredient developed by Solabia-Algatech Nutrition. It consists of the whole dried microalgae, *Euglena gracilis*, which is produced via a proprietary fermentation process. [5, 10] The product's primary active component is paramylon, a linear β-1,3-glucan, which constitutes a minimum of 50-55% of its content, along with complete proteins, vitamins, and minerals. [1, 2] BioGlena™ is designed for immune support and acts as an immunomodulator. [1, 5] It functions by targeting the Dectin-1 receptor on innate immune cells, like macrophages, to induce a state of 'trained immunity'. [1, 4, 10] This process involves a functional reprogramming of the immune cells, leading to a stronger and faster response to subsequent pathogenic challenges. [1, 5] The product is administered orally and is available as a powder for use in capsules, tablets, gummies, and functional foods. [1] It has been approved as a novel food by the EFSA and is recognized as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by the FDA. [1, 10]
