Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Whole salmon oil is a natural oil extracted from the tissues of the salmon (Salmo salar and related species). It is characterized as a rich dietary source of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These omega-3 fatty acids are incorporated into cell membranes in the body, where they exert anti-inflammatory effects by modulating eicosanoid production and cell signaling pathways, contribute to cardiovascular health by lowering triglyceride levels and improving cholesterol profiles, support cognitive function by providing structural and functional support to neuronal cell membranes, and promote skin, eye, and immune health. Whole salmon oil may be used as a supplement for general health maintenance, management of dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease risk reduction, and as an adjunct in inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. It can be administered orally in capsule or liquid form, and sometimes used topically for skin health. Whole salmon oil is distinct from generic fish oil in that it is obtained exclusively from salmon, which tends to have a distinctive profile of EPA, DHA, and potentially astaxanthin along with minor constituents.[1][2][3][4]
