Overview

The whole virion H5N1 influenza vaccine is an inactivated, non-infectious vaccine prepared from the entire (whole) avian-origin A/H5N1 influenza virus. The virus is propagated in embryonated hen’s eggs and then chemically inactivated, typically using agents such as formalin or β-propiolactone. Unlike split or subunit vaccines that contain only parts of the viral particle, this formulation contains the complete viral structure (minus infectivity), which can enhance immunogenicity. The primary antigenic component is hemagglutinin (HA), which induces protective antibody responses against the highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) strain. Some formulations include adjuvants such as aluminum phosphate to further boost immune response[2][3][8]. Whole virion vaccines have been shown to be more immunogenic than split-virus vaccines and may require fewer doses for effective immunity[2][3]. These vaccines are primarily developed for pandemic preparedness and stockpiling against potential outbreaks of avian flu.
