The whole virion seasonal influenza vaccine (sWIV) is an investigational, egg-based, whole inactivated virus (WIV) vaccine designed for the prevention of seasonal influenza. Developed by the Netherlands' National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in collaboration with the Institute for Translational Vaccinology (Intravacc), the vaccine utilizes a monovalent H3N2 formulation produced through a transferable manufacturing process intended for technology transfer to low- and middle-income countries. Unlike split-virion or subunit vaccines, the whole virion approach preserves the entire structure of the virus, including its RNA and internal proteins, which can act as intrinsic adjuvants by triggering Toll-like receptors (TLRs). This potentially enhances the immune response, specifically the production of hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin (HA) protein.
