Overview

The wild type feline HER2 DNA vaccine is a research-stage DNA vaccine construct encoding the unmodified (wild-type) feline HER2 protein. Developed by researchers at Wayne State University, it has been evaluated in outbred domestic cats as a potential veterinary immunotherapy for feline mammary carcinoma and as a comparative model for human breast cancer vaccines. The vaccine is administered via intramuscular electrovaccination (electroporation) to stimulate an immune response against HER2-overexpressing tumor cells. However, preclinical studies have shown that the wild-type construct has a limited ability to overcome immune tolerance compared to heterologous or point-mutated feline HER2 DNA vaccine variants, and it may even hinder immune activation by other vaccines.
