The **wild-type inactivated poliovirus vaccine** is a vaccine using killed (inactivated with formalin) wild-type poliovirus strains—specifically Mahoney (type 1), MEF-1 (type 2), and Saukett (type 3)—to induce immunity against poliomyelitis. Developed originally by Jonas Salk in 1955, the vaccine is produced by culturing poliovirus in cell lines, purifying, and inactivating it with formalin. The vaccine stimulates IgG-mediated immune responses in the bloodstream, protecting against polio-associated paralysis but not inducing strong mucosal immunity. This vaccine type is distinct from the Sabin (sIPV) vaccine, which uses attenuated strains, and from the oral polio vaccine (OPV) which is live-attenuated.
