WinFlex is a topical cream formulation of glucosamine sulphate developed by the Belgian company Bio Minerals n.v. for the treatment of pain associated with osteoarthritis, particularly of the hand. Glucosamine sulphate is a naturally occurring amino sugar that serves as a precursor for the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, which are essential components of the joint cartilage matrix. By delivering glucosamine topically, WinFlex aims to provide high local concentrations of the active ingredient to the affected joints while minimizing systemic exposure. The drug's mechanism of action involves supporting cartilage metabolism and exerting anti-inflammatory effects, potentially by inhibiting interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) signaling and the NF-κB pathway. A Phase 2 clinical trial conducted in Belgium demonstrated that WinFlex cream was effective in reducing pain and improving joint function in patients with hand osteoarthritis over a 2–4 week treatment period.
