Overview

The **WINGS HIV Vaccine** refers to a mosaic HIV-1 vaccine regimen evaluated in the **WINGS** (Women's Initiative for Next Generation HIV Vaccines) study, also known as **HVTN 102**. Developed through a collaboration between the **National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)**, **Crucell** (now part of **Janssen**), and **Bavarian Nordic**, the vaccine utilizes a prime-boost strategy. It typically consists of a live, replication-incompetent **adenovirus type 26 (Ad26)** vector and a **Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA)** vector, both expressing 'mosaic' HIV-1 antigens. These mosaic antigens are bioinformatically designed to elicit immune responses against a wide range of global HIV-1 strains by incorporating sequences from multiple viral subtypes (e.g., Gag, Pol, and Env). The primary goal of the WINGS study was to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of this regimen specifically in healthy HIV-negative women, representing a critical step in developing a globally effective HIV vaccine.
