Withania coagulans is a medicinal plant, traditionally used in Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems for its antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, wound healing, hepatoprotective, and antimicrobial properties[3][4][5]. The plant contains a number of bioactive compounds, most notably the steroidal lactones known as withanolides (including withaferin A, coagulansol, withanolide A, coagulin, and others), as well as flavonoids, tannins, β-sterols, fatty acids, and aromatic esters[3][4][5]. Extracts of the plant have demonstrated hypoglycemic, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects in animal models[1][2], and have shown potential for reducing oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α) in diabetic kidney injury[2]. Withania coagulans extract also accelerates wound healing by promoting tissue regeneration, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis[1][3]. The mechanism of action is not fully established but may involve modulation of neurotransmitter systems (e.g., GABAergic activity for anticonvulsant effects), amelioration of oxidative stress, and reduction of inflammatory cytokines[2][3]. Withania coagulans is primarily used as a dietary supplement and herbal medicine, not as a modern pharmaceutical[3][4][5].
